Seniors-Masters Championships Won by Fred Jones, Mik Mehas, and Peter Just & Bill Martin
12-16 November 2008
National Croquet Center, West Palm Beach, FL
scores by John Osborn
Cooler weather finally reached West Palm Beach Sunday — a relief to many of the players still in contention. Matches ranged from the nail-biter to the landslide, the spirits high in either case.
In the Championship Flight Masters, Bill Berne took his first ball to the stake only to have Fred Jones hit in from the fourth to the second corner, run the course himself and peg out Bill’s rover ball. Things were not boring from then on, but Fred did prevail with a 17-14 score. Mik Mehas captured the Championship Seniors (22-19) over a determined Mike Gibbons. Mik grabbed an early large lead, but when Mike ran wicket three from the boundary he clawed his way back, eventually running out of time. Geoffrey Mattison looked solid taking the First Flight Masters (22-10) over Nancy Reynolds and Bob McQuinn snuck past Donna Dixon (13-12) by scoring the winning wicket in last turn in the First Flight Seniors. Joe Pierotti took advantage of John Shirreffs errors to win the Second Flight with a 12-7 score.
Peter Just & Bill Martin won the Championship Flight Doubles (18-2) in a match filled with Tom Hughes & Barry Gibson mistakes. Geoffrey Mattison & Donna Dixon (more like Donna with Geoffrey along for the ride) overcame Betty Whitlow & Glenn Bennett (16-10) in the First Flight Doubles and Dorthy Fosse & Ann Reade thrilled the crowd with a last-turn wicket to capture the Second Flight Doubles with a 12-11 victory over the stubborn Joe Pierotti & Lois Holdsclaw.
