Edmund A. "Ned" Prentis, III

Picture if you will — a Panama hat, white shorts, white knee socks with red flashers, and the occasional bush jacket. You now have an image that is familiar to all those Croquet players throughout the Country who have encountered the redoubtable Ned Prentis. The mixture of uniquely stylized dress and steadfast loyalty to Croquet and its many friends has endeared him to all of us.

"Steady" perhaps is the catchword for Ned who at age 58 is the retired Treasurer of Spencer, White and Prentis, Inc., Engineers, and lives with his wife Betty in Del Ray, Florida and Westhampton Beach, L.I. Many times past President of the Westhampton Mallet Club, he has firmly supported his club through the years and has represented it most admirably in local and National events.

His forceful, conservative style of play has brought him numerous titles and with his son, Teddy, has managed to capture the 1980 and 1981 National Double's Championships. This past year Ned won all of his International Challenge Cup Matches and has now served twice on the United States Team adding much to the success of the results.

Through his continued generous support of the U.S.C.A. and The Westhampton Mallet Club, he has helped to contribute to the tremendous growth of Croquet. A golfer, fisherman, and world traveler Ned is ranked among the top croquet players in this country. Having a wife, four children and three in-laws, six are croquet players and four are currently on the circuit. His favorite expression is "In croquet the Prentis' come at you in waves". May he always be at the head of this wave. Ned, we welcome you to the Hall of Fame.

Edmund A. "Ned" Prentis, III was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1982.
