USCA North Carolina GC Club Teams

The Annual North Carolina Club Teams wrapped up late last month in Linville, North Carolina. The event saw 39 doubles teams from 10 clubs across the state ascend to the mountains to test their skills against one another in the hopes of taking home the coveted Mac Penwell Trophy!

The forecast coming into the event was ominous, with threats of heavy rains and lightning almost every day. Thursday did almost wash the players away, but the players were undeterred. By the end of the day’s block play several clubs had emerged as frontrunners, but the standings were neck and neck with Grandfather, Bald Head Island, and Linville Ridge all within a couple points of each other. Friday saw sunny skies and better conditions, and Highlands Falls showed their strength and closed the gap with some strong block play.

The knockouts on Saturday saw Grandfather, last year’s champions, start to create some separation. By the end of day five grandfather teams had fought their way into a Sunday final. But Bald Head Island and Highlands Falls were holding strong, and each took a team to the final of the second flight main knockout. In the end Grandfather managed to defend their title, with Chris and Gail Barley winning the championship flight knockout, while Mark Jordan and Tony Watts won the first flight knockout. Bald Head Island won the second flight main knockout, and came in second for the event overall. Highlands Falls, after a slow start, marched to third place falling just short of the second place spot by a handful of games.

Good performances were on display every day throughout the event, from all the clubs, as well as excellent sportsmanship and warm camaraderie. We look forward to next year!
