Tulsa Croquet Club
“Hoops in The Heat”
A few years after the Tulsa Croquet Club was formed in 1988, we learned that Joe “Buddy” LaFortune dedicated an area in LaFortune Park to lawn bowling and croquet and they were registered as the LaFortune Park Croquet Club with USCA. However, they were happy to combine with us under the Tulsa Croquet Club name. One of our tournaments in our early days in August was called “Hoops in the Heat”, but I don’t recall any of those tournaments having 100+ degree everyday like this 2026 MW Regional, which we had for all 4 days After our first day, our Tournament Director decided to shorten the singles games from 75 to 60 minutes going forward after the first day.
The high temperatures were mitigated to a large degree by having our recently built facility with a shaded deck and air conditioned building with a kitchen and indoor restrooms. Thanks to our ongoing support by Tulsa County Parks with Director Matt Hancock and their “groundskeeping crew” led by Brad Remke, we continue to develop the best playing surface that we’ve ever had.
We love having old friends from around the croquet world back to Tulsa as well as newcomers and guests like Patricia Peterkin and April Hovis. We appreciate all those who helped with hospitality, Mary Baird, Barbara Parsells, Ginny McQuigg, Karen Hampton, and Lucy Spaulding for her dozens of cookies. In addition to playing singles and doubles with some injuries, Jon Spaulding prepared a great burger meal for us. The backbone of our club, Joe Steiner, was there every morning at 7:00 or earlier placing, pounding and calibrating wickets on all 4 courts every day with the dedicated assistance our our newest TCC Member Valerie Johnson. Matt Baird did a great job as always as Tournament Director.
Then there was the competition. George Cochran showed his -2.5 prowess in defeating Kevin McQuigg for 1st Place in Championship Singles. Championship Doubles Winners were Britt Ruby and Matt Baird prevailing over the team of Ron Millican and Greg Clouse. In First Flight, Scott Stewart beat Greg Adams for 1st while amassing 48 points with his handicap of 7. Scott and his partner Bob Baker took 1st Place over the Deborah Millican/Suzanne Spradling team in First Flight Doubles competition.
Despite the brutally high heat, we feel that everything went well. We enjoyed a Tournament Dinner at Oliveto Bistro. And it’s always great to be in the company of such great friends.
