SOUTH OF THE BORDER

DOWN MEXICO WAY

Olé.  In the central mountains of Mexico there is the Hope Harmon Croquet Club, until recently, the only croquet club in Latin America.  It is in the historic town of San Miguel de Allende, a town dating back to the 1540's with cobble stone streets and history around every bend.

The club has a single full court and the membership fluctuates, as you can imagine. Presently there are about 50 members.

The court is on the outskirts of town, down a long dusty road. You will come to a walled group of buildings and a door.  You will have arrived.

In the mornings play is reserved for AR 6 Wicket Play and the afternoons are devoted to Golf Croquet. which is becoming increasingly popular.

At one end of the court is the club house, used for parties, dinners and social gatherings.  The lady players pretty much run the show from what I know.

Jeanette and I join the club with a short term membership when we are there.  We have gone many times. A number of USCA members have as well.  If you find yourself in San Miguel de Allende you should as well.

In years past, the Hope Harmon CC has hosted international tournaments with players from Canada, Spain, Mexico and the United States competing.

The lawn is challenging and the wickets are very forgiving.

A manicured, putting green-like surface is not what you will find.  You can put all your skills on show navigating the tall grass and the thin and playing the local customs (such as, if your ball touches any part of the boundary line it is considered out of bounds).

Unfortunately Hope Harmon is no longer living and the club property is tied up in a probate proceeding. My understanding is that there was no will and it may be in litigation for some time. Long term no one knows what will happen, but it is likely the club will need to find a new home.
Enjoy it while you can.
