2022 Turkey Trot Double-Digit Handicap
Lenox Croquet Club
September 1-3, 2022
The Lenox Croquet Club held its second annual Turkey Trot Double-Digit Handicap tournament September 1-3, 2022 in Lenox, Massachusetts. A compact field of eight players came from five states: Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, with handicaps ranging from 10 to 15.
With this event, the Club focuses on providing a great experience for players who would be found in the second or third flight in the typical invitational tournament. To allow everyone to play at one time without double-banking -- a luxury few tournaments offer -- we set up four 60' x 84' courts on our two lawns. A full round-robin block gave each player seven 90-minute games over two full days and Saturday morning. Two playoffs followed, with the top four from the block competing for the Championship trophies and the rest fighting it out for the Plate.
Bob Snyder of Falmouth, Maine, last year's top Turkey, was the #1 seed with a handicap of 10 and played solidly throughout, dropping only one block game over the three days. In the final, Bob defeated Kim Beaty of Dorset, Vermont by a score of 16-12. Kim, whose official handicap was 14 when she entered, showed off her marked improvement since last year's tournament by getting to the final over lower-handicapped competition and giving Bob a run for his money. In the Plate final, Ken Heim of Pittsfield & Long Island defeated Sarah Persons of Simsbury, Connecticut with a convincing score of 21-10.
The Lenox Croquet Club thanks the numerous members who volunteered their time to set up courts, serve breakfasts, lunches, and afternoon toast-and-tally provisions, act as referees, and keep deadness boards.
